What happens after filing a tax petition?

After filing your tax appeal by April 30th, if your property is income or rent producing, we will file required financial documents with the assessor by August 1st. We will let you know what documents we need to file with the assessor.

The next step is always to meet with the assessor and provide information in support of the correct market value. Sometimes, a simple verification of basic information about the property, such as the size, age and condition of the structures can lead to a correction in the valuation. Assessors often use a per square foot valuation for buildings and using the correct size could result in a corrected reduction in market value and lower taxes.

Next, we will share with the assessor, our support for our opinion of your property’s value. Most cases are settled at this stage of the appeal as we work directly with the local assessor. If we cannot reach an agreement with the assessor, the tax appeal proceeds to the Minnesota Tax Court.
